The best tasting honey from from Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties was judged in the Third Annual Mayland Black Jar Honey Contest on Oct. 19 at Homeplace Beer Company in Burnsville. Ten entries were received in the contest.  Winning entry was from Whippoorwill Hill Apiary in Newland (Ingalls), Deborah Griffith, beekeeper, a late summer sourwood extraction. Second place was a tie between Poplar Creek Farms, in Poplar, beekeeper Michelle Majia; and Chestnut Mountain Farms, Little Switzerland, beekeeper Susan Spruill. Third place went to Oleo Acres in Little Switzerland, beekeeper Cheryl Hughes.

Toe Cane Beekeepers will sponsor Whippoorwill Hill's honey in the 7th Annual International Black Jar Honey Tasting Contest, organized by the Center for Honeybee Research in Asheville. Judging for that event takes pace in January.
